In this regard it's the GoPro Hero4 cameras which stand out, thanks to their 30 fps shooting. While maybe not THAT important to most people when reading a comparison of features, it would be nice to see photos of the bottom of each camera or case so people can see each manufacturers mounting method and mechanisms. You will also want to consider what mounts are included or available, in case you want to do something like strapping your action cameras to your dog, and think about how this will impact its size.The cameras with the widest view are the GoPro Hero4 duo, the Sony Action Cam Mini and the Contour Roam3, which all boast similar 17-mm equivalent – or 170-degree – lenses. These sensor sizes are around the same as those typically used in smartphones, but much smaller than those in quality cameras. Best budget-friendly camera: Not every sports action junkie has four Benjamins to drop on a GoPro. When shooting video, a smaller section of the sensor is normally used, producing a slightly narrower field-of-view. However, while some of them are rugged and waterproof straight out of the box, others need to be put into a protective housing before being subjected to extreme conditions or submerged in water. I am looking for a compact camera for very wide angle landscape stills, and the action cameras seem best. While no other company offers the number of mount options that GP has, that's in great part because no other company needs them. The reason for this is that if much bigger sensors were used, the lenses and the entire actioncam would also need to grow accordingly, and you don't want a DSLR-szed action camera strapped to your helmet. Granted, its 5MP lens won’t match the hi-res output found on most premium substitutes, but the MHD still delivers far better results than anyone could expect from a camera in its price class. Fortunately for you, we’ve managed to narrow down the top offerings based on performance, suitability, features and price. Whether you want to document your extreme exploits, or simply create a video of a family day out, an unobtrusive and sturdy action camera might be the best tool for the job. Some of the cameras like the Contour Roam3 and Drift Stealth 2 feature rotating lenses which can be twisted around to allow shooting in different orientations. You can watch recorded videos or view picture images you took with the camera, and you can also make minor changes to the camera as well with the app. Before we get into the comparisons, it's worth noting that unlike most other camera categories, where released specifications are fairly standardized, action camera manufacturers often choose not to release certain information, or present it in different formats. The Contour Roam3 is the cheapest action camera in our selection at US$200, with the GoPro Hero4 Black being the most expensive at $500. All of these action cameras tick that box and have lenses ranging from 17-mm to 20-mm equivalent. But I think I have seen 4 or 5 engines go by about 8-10 mph in the 3 years I’ve lived here.  But I found battery life can vary depending on usage, climate, leaving LCD screen on or off, and whether you conserve battery life by turning the camera off when not in use. All cameras are very good but you still need to have an expertise on it and know exactly how to use them. Given the beating that action cameras can receive in the line of duty, you might also need one which can take a knock or survive extreme cold temperatures. There are various types of action cameras that are used from car racing to sky-diving to mountain biking to skateboarding or any other activity you can think of. A 2-inch LCD panel covered in Gorilla Glass comes plastered on the side of the device and promotes a user-friendly interface that bestows instant access for multimedia playback, set-up shots and settings. Battery life can range dramatically on the same camera depending on recording resolution, frame-rate, and what other features are being used. Of the LCD monitors, the biggest is the 2-inch offering which is included with the Veho Muvi K2 NPNG. For example, while we've included the Drift Stealth 2, you might be better served by its bigger brother, the Drift Ghost S. Because Garmin was unable to provide us with any lens measurement other than "Wide," we've provided estimates measurements based on sample images. Or maybe quirky action cameras like the RE from HTC, or the cute Polaroid Cube might suit you better. Lastly, Drift awards owners with a wearable RF remote to control video recordings and switch shooting modes, along with a handful of mounts that can be attached to goggles and flat or curved surfaces. This wouldn’t have been a big deal, but since I had the camera in the Frame Mount, it was cumbersome to remove the Frame Mount, then the LCD screen, then open the battery door to finally take out the battery. For example, once the lightweight 83g GoPro Hero4 Silver is in its protective housing, it weighs 147g, making it more comparable to the heavier cameras which don't always need a case. This is why some already waterproof cameras, such as the JVC Adixxion GC-XA2 and Garmin Virb Elite, can also be used with dedicated protective cases. And speaking of removing the battery, I took the BlackVue camera with me on a weekend trip to Orlando, Florida with my family. However, as you'll see soon, heavier cameras typically have a level of sturdiness (and often waterproofing) that the lighter cameras can only match when in their protective housing. The quirky Panasonic HX-A500 features a distinctive camera and recording unit design that will appeal to some users who want to use it attached to their head or clipped to their body, but will no doubt rule it out for others. I wondered how I was going to see what direction my camera was pointed, until I connected it to my phone via WIFI. The next fastest camera is the JVC GC-XA2, which is only capable of half the speed, 15 fps. The Flashback Video mode, a setting where the camera records footage in a continuous loop for up to five minutes and saves it, ensures you don’t miss a shot. Best new camera: It would be remiss to not point out Garmin’s direct assault on the GoPro market when introducing the VIRB. At first glance you might wonder why action cameras come in at such a wide range of weights. Last year when we compared action cameras the GoPro Hero3+ Black was the only offering to feature 4K video recording, and then only at 15 fps. The Garmin Virb Elite and Veho Muvi K2 NPNG also feature an LCD monitor, but with different form factors that could better suit how you want to use the camera. While the Contour Roam3 is stated to have a burst speed of 1 fps, we understand this is an interval burst rate, which is intended more for creating time-lapse videos, with other setting allowing for shooting at 3, 5, 10 or 60 second intervals. Though it’s enclosed in a plastic shell seemingly no more hardy than the rear plate of a Samsung Galaxy phone, it’s capable of sustaining more bumps than Chris Brown’s Porsche. It failed a few times when I tried to turn it on, so I had to power down the camera, pull the battery out, then turn the camera back on to get the WiFi working properly. Inconvenient, yes, but not a deal breaker for me. We are as interested as you are to see how the HD Hero 3 compares to the other action cams reviewed in this article, in particular the Sony AS15 and we aim to bring you the answer to that question in the near future. Hopefully this comparison has helped you to identify which features and specifications you would would like in your next action camera, and those that you can't do without. Built-in wi-fi means you can edit and transfer clips on iOS devices, while the camera’s removable battery pack widens the possibilities of extra power during long hikes. The Panasonic HX-A500, JVC GC-XA2 and Garmin Virb Elite all also feature built-in monitors, though Garmin strangely declined to share the resolution of its offering claiming that it was "proprietary information." Optional dedicated monitors can be used with the GoPro Hero4 Black, and in the form of a controller watch for the Sony Action Cam Mini. There was no response from any button I tried pressing, and I had to pull the battery to get the camera working again. An aerodynamic form factor and lightweight dimensions equate to an unobtrusive and sleek profile, yet the integrated NP-BX1 cell generates longer battery life than any other action camera out at an estimated three to four hours. Take a break from planning that next base-jumping adventure and get a closer at the five best action cameras available now. This is going to be noticeably lighter than other cameras if wearing it using the head mount. This is great for consumers as it means you can buy a camera which is going to best fit how you plan to use it, whether that's mounting it to your skateboard, mountain bike or helmet. The sizes given are for the action cameras without any additional casing (even though the GoPro duo are shown in theirs). With the BlackVue app you can make changes to your camera’s settings such as the ISO, camera megapixel resolution, high-speed frame rate, self-timer, and a few more. Contour also includes a clear plastic case that adds an extra layer of shock-resistance protection for good measure. I don't know hey, the GoPro in regular lighting conditions is typically warmer - this is especially visible in the aircraft comparison. With demand for first-person adrenaline recaps rising, the market for these action cams has vastly expanded. Because the Panasonic HX-A500 uses a quirky design which separates the camera from the recording unit, it's worth considering its weight distribution. It's also worth noting that the Panasonic HX-A500 and Sony Action Cam Mini feature NFC connectivity for easy pairing with compatible devices, and that the Garmin Virb Elite has built-in GPS. Maybe it was because I was heavily using the camera, but a handful of times to reset the camera is bothersome. If mount availability for non-threaded mounts is a serious consideration, RePlay has far more mount options than any two manufacturers combined, both in low-cost plastic and high-grade billet aluminum. As a result, action cameras have undergone a tremendous shift from the low-resolution bullet cameras of 5 years ago. Otherwise, users will need to install an SD card (purchased separately) and the device is ready to roll. Oh, I did see a few engines go by when we are playing out front since I basically live on a dead end street so there is rarely any traffic. Unfortunately, a handful of times I had to pull the battery because the camera seemed to be frozen. We set out with 6 of the most popular models of action cameras in an all-out camera review. While we don't have officially-released figures for a couple of cameras, users have reported the Sony Action Cam Mini lasting for around 1hr 15 minutes, and the Panasonic HX-A500 around the 2hr 30 minute mark. Setting out to find the best action cam, I assembled a collection of mounting points onto my Bonehead Flattop Pro camera helmet. The red dot at the top of the screen that lets you know you are recording would not go away. It is probably easier to just make these camera setting changes right from the camera without the need for the app. Douglas is an accomplished aerial photographer who thrives in the adrenaline-filled world of fast-action videography. Of course the train tracks are literally 2o yards opposite my driveway on the other side of an empty street and where the tracks and are unobstructed by anything seeing how you can see about half a mile in either direction. An external housing (which is included with some action cameras, and an optional extra for others) typically means devices can be submerged deeper and for longer than those which rely on built-in waterproofing. The "action" in the subject of an "action camera" session is not necessarily well-lit, in fact, there's usually something wrong with the amount of light! The 2-hour battery life of the JVC GC-XA2 is when shooting at 720p 30 fps, and we are not sure of the Veho settings, but we'd be surprised if it had the stamina to last 4 hours at 1080p 30 fps. But at this end of the price-range, the JVC Adixxion GC-XA2 is quite compelling in that it includes built-in toughness, wireless capabilities and an LCD screen. On a side note, the battery is rated to have a life of about 2 hours, and that seemed accurate from my use of the camera.  |
