You’ll find ultra-wide useful for shooting in tight cockpits, where you want to see both front-seat occupants, or the entire instrument panel. It also allows you to see a live preview of what the camera is recording, perfect for helping you frame your shots. Setting the camera to 2.7k you can shoot in 24fps or 30fps, which are the standard frame rates for film and television. Plus, the top of the case sports a newly designed safety slider lock to prevent the accidental release and opening of the case underwater. While the adhesive mounts may work for some applications in small airplanes, we recommend starting out with the optional suction mount. After testing this camera side by side with the HD Hero2, it is apparent that three major features have been significantly improved: the in-camera audio, the low light capabilities, and the internal menu usability. On the plus side, the 4k frame size is so large you can pull usable screenshots from the footage to use as stand-alone photos. Detailed instructions for how to pair the remote for the first time are included in the packaging. GoPro also added an exclusive Wi-Fi button on the side of the HERO3 to shortcut access to Wi-Fi settings. First consider an audio cable to record all your headset audio (background engine noise gets boring!). For those who want to experiment with this mode, make sure to download GoPro’s free CineForm Studio software to do basic editing. Now press the red button to return to the previous menu, and use the mode button to move the cursor down to highlight FPS. When recording at normal 1080p HD settings (see below), the 32GB card will store about 3 hours and 20 minutes of video, and the 64GB card will store 6 hours and 45 minutes. However, the Hero3 includes an expert mode called ProTune that stores extra data while recording video. It contains the same LCD display and controls as the camera, allowing you to adjust any setting and start or stop recording. Mounting the camera in wild places such as on top of a 30-foot pole, or shooting from the bottom of the swimming pool is a cinch with the Wi-Fi Remote. If you don’t have one of these devices, you can add an optional LCD screen to the camera. The GoPro Hero3+ offers a wide variety of recording options, including the ability to record in a resolution that is significantly more detailed than HD (4K, 3840x2160). The Hero3 includes a few adhesive mounts that will work OK on the glareshield in your airplane, but you’ll probably want to consider using something a little more secure. The footage from both cameras was full of video noise, but what was fascinating was the amount of dynamic range in the HERO3: Black Edition footage. While you probably won’t need to change your video recording resolution very often, you may find it helpful to experiment with the field of view (FOV) settings. Press the red button again to select the resolution, and use the mode button to scroll down the list until 1080 is selected. Now, with the improved HERO3, the settings menu allows the user to hold the record button and swiftly jump out of the menu and back to camera mode, ready to go.Overall AwesomenessIt's a camera like the HERO3 that excites our passion for creating videos. To install the battery, you’ll first need to remove the camera from the clear protective housing, which can be a tricky when doing it for the first time. Since most people use the camera for video recording, the camera will default to this mode each time the camera is powered on. When the camera is mounted outside the airplane, however, we recommend using the standard door to protect the camera from the elements and to cut down on high speed wind noise. Additionally, the HERO3 is mounted in the same align-and-tighten fashion as previous versions, which is good news that most older accessories are compatible. Press the small black button on the left side of the camera to enable WiFi, and a blue light will begin flashing on the front of the camera. To get around this, GoPro includes a modified rear door to use with the case containing a couple openings, allowing sound to better reach the microphone. Even without the housing, the HD HERO2 sounded tinny and faint, but the HERO3: Black Edition sounded surprisingly clear, somewhat usable and comparable to the on-camera audio of a DSLR. This is particularly useful for those who are looking to mount the GoPro on the outside of an airplane. Turning ProTune on will also cut down on the amount of video you can record on the SD card. Once this bracket is loose, the rear door of the casing will unhinge and you’ll be able to remove the camera. This tiny HERO3: Black Edition may not shoot footage like a cinema camera, it may not take photos like a DLSR, and it may not have all the bells and whistles of a full-sized camcorder, but it doesn't need to. This mounting option allows you to capture some exciting angles and views from the outside of your airplane with the GoPro. Also inside the box you’ll find several accessories, including a few adhesive mounts, battery, charging cable, remote and a 3-way pivot arm. Shooting outside the airplane in this mode during takeoff or landing looks good in some situations, but you may find that the medium or narrow provides more detail on the areas directly in front of the camera. This is because the waterproof case is nearly airtight and blocks out most of the ambient audio too. You can discard the piece it was clipped into, which is attached to the box and its only purpose is to keep the camera secure in the packaging. One piece of advice when using the suction mount: secure it as close to the edge of a window as possible to reduce vibration from the engine and turbulence. Pair the immense video and photo potential of the HERO3: Black Edition with the integrated Wi-Fi and waterproof remote and capture all the action, even when you are the subject in front of the camera!The camera can be controlled completely by the wireless and waterproof keychain remote. This tiny video camera weighs only 2.6 oz, but can record incredible 4K video with a wide angle, 170-degree lens. Included with the HERO3: Black Edition is a non-waterproof backdoor with openings for improved audio while using the camera in less than 100 miles per hour winds. The 4k frame size is almost four times the size of normal high definition 1920x1080 pixels. Red lights on the front, top and rear of the camera will begin flashing to indicate recording status. Compared to the White and Silver HERO3 models released in October 2012, the Black Edition is the top performer, and a giant step up from the HD HERO2 model.Designed for professional use, yet with the beginner videographer in mind, this little device is easily learned, quickly mastered and ready for a multitude of applications. Write this information down, as you’ll need it when you go to connect the camera to your phone or tablet for the first time. The standard 24fps and 30fps are available at the lower resolutions in addition to some fancy high frame rates. If you're still looking for better quality than 1080p, the HERO3: Black Edition offers two modes that are still almost double in size. In order to exit the settings menu on the HD HERO2 you had to repeatedly click the Mode button until you found "EXIT." Heaven forbid you missed it, and you'd have to cycle through all the options hoping you would not skip it again. For mountain biking and other shots where a 4:3 aspect ratio is suitable the 48fps at 1440p feature is great to get more of a squared frame. This Skeleton door works well when the camera is mounted inside the airplane to record the normal aircraft sounds from inside the cockpit. You'll never miss a shot with a wide selection of time-lapse settings and the speedy 12MP photo bursts with as many as 30 photos a second. This allows you to quickly mount the camera in a wide variety of positions to record shots out the side and shots out the front during takeoff and landing. Compared to the HERO2, which tends to overexpose highlights and completely lose the dark areas, the dynamic range of the HERO3: Black Edition footage allows for those areas to be recovered. The ball attaches to the outside of the camera housing, and allows you to now use the camera with any of RAM’s mounting options. The GoPro Hero3 can also be fitted with a small RAM ball accessory that allows you to use it with the popular RAM mounting system. The red light on the front will stay lit while charging, and then go out when the battery is fully charged. While this may sound enticing at first, the frame rate is limited to 15 frames per second (fps), which produces a choppier, less fluid picture. If you have an iPhone, iPad or Android phone you’ll find it helpful to use the app with the camera to help align your shots with live preview. GoPro recommends fully depleting and then charging the battery through 3 cycles to get the best battery life. This same power button is also used to cycle through the various recording modes: video, photo, photo burst, time lapse and settings.
