08 Июл. 2015 г.Gopro hd hero 2 dive housingThe housing just can’t cope with the diffraction and distortion with its supplied housing so you get really poor, blurry images…what a shame! Now a great looking underwater housing that can't accept filters (unless you unscrew the port and put a gel inside).You can see the difference in a video below but please be aware that the camera in the original housing is the Go Pro HD Hero 1 and the camera in the flat port housing is the Go Pro HD Hero 2. Anyone who has used a GoPro 2 will tell you its WB only operates between narrow limits - read is crap (basically UW footage quickly becomes blue). Backscatter’s Custom GoPro Underwater Housing ($119) is well made and includes a glass lens and removable filter mount. The cage is really nice, since water pressure compresses the housing and the clip often opens up. Left to right: GoPro Dive Housing, Backscatter Custom Housing with Flat Lens (and removable filters), and Eye of Mine flat port housing with filter. The footage when seen at full resolution on my screen at home is amazing and I would heartily recommend getting one of these housings for your Go Pro HD Hero 1 or 2 as it makes a world of difference. Now both cameras are very sharp and film well at 1080p above water but take my work for it when I say that even the Go PRo HD Hero 2 looked very poor underwater with the supplied housing. I recently came across a company selling modified housings that included a flat port front cover for the lens and after carefully reviewing the product and watching various videos, I bought one from a company in the States (details below). I've found the filter supplied by Backscatter sends the GoPro way into the green underwater. Note: Since writing this article, Go Pro themselves have now released a great looking flat port housing for the HD Hero cameras. The new Dive Housing's lens is constructed from flat glass, allowing the best possible photo and video sharpness underwater no matter what resolution, free of vignetting. I guess I'd summarise it - that GoPro are excellent on the camera tech, but I'd rather trust underwater specialists (like Backscatter) to make it into an underwater system. As far as I know, the Eye of Mine 3D housing is the only flat-port 3D solution that does not vignette at full wide. Relatively beautiful colors but you have to spin up the camera for about 20 seconds for the auto white to stabilize.  I remember their original housing was marketed as "even shoot underwater" until everyone pointed out it wouldn't actually focus underwater. Unlike the third-party modifications, the GoPro Dive Housing’s lens is rectangular, which makes the housing just a bit more bulky. Ok, I admit it, I am a huge fan of the Go Pro cameras and this new Go Pro Flat Port Housing makes all the difference! They also have a 3D underwater housing ($199), but the modified flat ports are quite small and will vignette at full wide, underwater. This camera would be perfect for snorkelers, scuba divers, surfers, shark watchers (yes, I have seen Go Pros attached to the dorsal fin of a Tiger Shark) and so on. I currently don't have an underwater housing for my GoPro, I was waiting for the final details of the official GoPro one to be announced, but I have now bought a Backscatter one. I've sent e-mail to backscatter asking the lastest status of the GP divehousing filter; unfortunately the still can't confirm when it will be released. When it arrived, the first thing I did was to fill it with tissue paper, close it up and submerge it for a while to check its sealing…all was well. One nice feature is the included protective lens cap, which snaps on and off with a satisfying click. Compatible with all HD HERO cameras, GoPro mounts and accessories *except* the Wrist Housing. For this video, I simply held both cameras in my hand and shoved them in our (rather unkempt) pond and then into the kid’s bath using their toys as models (and a conditioner bottle for the lettering detail). Since Eye of Mine released their flat-port housing, many other manufactures have followed suit, the most notable being Backscatter, an underwater-imaging speciality store in Monterey, California. Next, I put my Go Pro HD Hero 2 in there and made some basic tests and compared it to previous footage I had taken a few months ago. Even if you use lights, it can really help to use filters unless you are right on top of your subject or using massive video lights.  |
