We were really hoping to see 4K video at a usable frame-rate (24FPS+), but I guess we'll have to wait until next year. Like the previous generation, the camera comes with a swappable Skeleton back panel for its clear plastic case that can be used to further improve audio quality at speeds below 100 mph at the expense of waterproofing. Rough terrain, extreme weather conditions, impacts and even the occasional underwater dunking. The Bad GoPro's control scheme has a longer learning curve than the simpler slide-n-go setup of the Contour cameras.
However, all of that reduction manifests in reduced thickness with a new depth of only 20mm. No, it's not quite as burly as last year's case which goes down to 197 feet (60m), but it will be a very small percentage of people that find 131 feet inadequate, and if they do, they can just put it into last year's housing.
It's supposed to automatically adjust your frame-rate to give you improved low-light shooting.
Some people complained that the Hero 3 Black would rattle around at speed, which would make for bad audio. We were able to get our hands on the new Black edition a little early, and here are our first impressions.
Ultimately, we love the GoPro range, and we can’t wait to get our hands on a GoPro Hero 3 so that we can test it fully and report back! The Black HD Hero 3 can also shoot a burst of 30 photographs at 12MP resolution, and can take 8MP photos at the same time as shooting 1080p footage. Last year, when GoPro's Hero 3 Black edition emerged victorious from our intensive Action Camera Battlemodo, we noted that while it won, we had some gripes that nearly cost it the crown. The board I was riding was 6-foot 4-inches (not ideal for knee-high waves), which meant I had to be pretty close to the camera. Maybe it depends on the mode you're in.) That's definitely better, but it's still about a half-hour shorter than the first edition of the Sony Action Cam. It's subtle, and so are its improvements, but they do indeed add up to make a better camera. I like to see GoPro doing more with less space here, but this connection scheme pretty much locks you into only using GoPro's first-party adapters, which may not be too big a deal for some users. That translates to less latency when you're using the smartphone app or the included remote control.
GoPro have just announced the release of their third generation of wearable HD sports cameras – the GoPro HD Hero 3. The Black Edition offers a number of ultra-high-resolution capture modes and high frame rates for standard HD resolutions; burst speeds for still photos has been greatly improved. In comparison the bullet style, rubberised finish of both the Ghost HD and the Virb scream ‘ACTION!
However, this built-in Wi-Fi functionality renders the WiFi BacPac itself obsolete for this new generation -- although you'll still need it if you have a few older Hero 2s kicking around. On the left side, behind a removable plastic panel, you'll find the Hero3's greatly simplified bank of connections.
There's a Micro-HDMI output, shrunken down from the Mini-HDMI of the previous generation, and a microSD card slot, shrunken down from a full-size SD card slot for space savings. I am an amateur film maker and my chosen subject is Land Rovers driving Green lanes on UK expeditions.
GoPro will continue selling last year's editions (presumedly until they run out) at a discounted cost. The Bottom Line The GoPro Hero3 Silver and White editions are strong contenders in the sports camera market, but the faster, more powerful Black Edition is head and shoulders the best sports camera on the market today. This includes full 1080p at 60fps (up from 30fps on the old Hero and Hero 2) and a huge 120fps at 720p (again doubling from the 60fps found on the previous models).
When you're shooting in 1080 or 720, the camera essentially crops the top and bottom of the image sensor, so it becomes 16:9. The mounting system is unchanged, so the new Hero 3 should work with all your existing mounts, though it is worth noting that it now works from MicroSD cards, so you may have to invest in some new high capacity cards if you plan on exploiting the full resolutions and frame rates.
We saw it in action, and indeed it was a bit quicker, but this wasn't a major complaint for us anyway. Sony recently announced that the sequel to its Action Camera will have a slimmed down waterproof housing, but it did that at the cost of making it waterproof to just 16 feet (5 meters). The $199 Hero3+ White Edition is also available.Lighter, smaller, sharper The GoPro Hero3 is 25 percent lighter than the previous-generation Hero 2's camera. The Virb is a relatively new product and the Virb HD replacement batteries are an eye watering ВЈ25 so you aren’t likely to pack 3 or 4 of them in your spare kit. There are also smaller red indicator lights on the top, back, and bottom panels that are visible from most angles. On the back panel, you'll find the removable cover for the 1,050mAh lithium ion battery. In addition to the Black edition which we tested, there will also be a Silver edition in the 3+ line (but no white edition). Both are very similar but I’d probably give it to the Ghost because of its fantastic multi-purpose remote control unit. Editors' note: The GoPro Hero3 product line, released in 2012, was replaced by the GoPro Hero3+ line as of October 2013. Finally, there's a Mini-USB port, which makes a return appearance, that is used for charging and syncing. In reality, if you crank these cameras up to their highest settings you eat battery life and memory cards and your action footage, if fast moving, just looks weird.
To put that in perspective, 120fps is going to allow the action to be slowed down by a factor of 4 in an edit while keeping the playback framerate a silky 30fps – not bad at all, especially considering that pro users will be able to push even further by using after effects plugins such as Twixtor.
I also found the LCD to be a bit difficult to read in direct sunlight.View full gallery (1 Photos)The Hero3 (right) is the smallest GoPro camera ever, edging out the previous Hero 2 (middle) and the old-school Digital Hero 5 (left). However, the characteristic fish-eye look of the video and photos captured by the Hero3 hasn't been totally removed, as it's sort of a hallmark of the action-camera style, adding a bit of drama to scenery as it speeds by.The Hero3 uses the same improved LCD of the Hero 2, with its monochromatic dot-matrix display. The original Hero 3 Black went one hour and 37 minutes of continuous shooting, and the Hero 3+ Black went two hours and nine, which is a very respectable 25-percent improvement over its predecessor.
The dimensions of the camera's body are exactly the same as the last one, which means it'll play nicely with the original Hero 3's cases.
The front panel is also home to two indicator lights: one red to indicate that the Hero is recording and one blue that blinks to indicate that Wi-Fi is active. GoPro has clearly tweaked its imaging software, too, because color balance is greatly improved.
We're not sure it'll hold up to the awesome mic on the Sony, but it's definitely better than it was. This is a slight digression but I won’t use anything but these VacMounts for action cameras, which are bullet proof and beyond compare! What becomes more interesting is the price and availability of spare batteries andВ how easy they are to swap out. Overall, these little things add up to a pretty large improvement, though it's not a reinvention of the wheel.
The GoPro 3 is the market leader and I find myself desperately trying to find something that sets it apart but again its picture quality proves to be a let down. Also, shooting at 4k the Hero 3 can only manage 15fps, which is not likely to interest many skiers or boarders wanting to capture smooth footage.
What is likely to get their interest those is the range of other shooting modes at the standard HD resolutions on the HD Hero 3.
The waterproof housing that comes with the Hero 3+ is 20-percent smaller and lighter, but it's still waterproof down to 131 feet (40 meters). From drivetrain tech and performance to car audio installs and cabin tech, if it's on wheels, Antuan is knowledgeable. If you have an image of balancing precariously on a ledge in driving rain while you flick open a compartment and slot in a fresh battery, think again because they are all fiddly to get to.
In other words, it just captures a lot more, which is something that can really improve the quality of your shots, regardless of the sport or activity. Lower (slower) frame-rates allow more light in, so if you're shooting 1080p at 60fps, and you're not getting enough light on the sensor, it may automatically drop you down to 24fps (which is as low as it will go, mercifully). What I find consistently in the area of accessories is that almost without exception they are shocking.
In a feature that's coming soon (but wasn't ready for launch), you'll be able to update your camera's firmware wirelessly, using the GoPro smartphone app. Sony claimed that almost no one uses it for deep dives, but people wanted something more trim and aerodynamic. We didn't really notice much happening on this front, but we definitely haven't given it a thorough evaluation yet. Antuan Goodwin gained most of his automotive knowledge the old fashioned way, by turning wrenches in a driveway and picking up speeding tickets. I'm standing roughly as tall in both of the shots, yet look how much more of me you can see in the shot on the left, and the warping was really insignificant. So the 3 cameras emerging as top dogs in that bracket are Garmins Virb HD, Drift’s Ghost HD and the market leading GoPro 3. Expect to spend a bit of time on your first outing just looping through the menus and getting used to where the options are.
However, with the aid of optional adapter cables, this Mini-USB port can also double as a 3.5 mm microphone input or an analog video output. Tests indicate that, at what I consider the optimal filming rate for an action camera – 720 at 60fps, you get in the region of 3 hours of film time from all these cameras. One of the biggest improvements on the 3+ Black is the SuperView mode which is available in 1080p and 720p. The fact I can conveniently flick it on and off also means my editing time is dramatically reduced.
On either side of the Hero3, you'll find a small pinhole microphone for audio recording alongside your video. To do this I am going to compare them in a number of critical areas with the only starting factor being that they must all be in a similar price bracket. View full gallery (1 Photos)The Hero3 consolidates the previous generation's inputs and outputs down to two ports and a card slot.
On the right side of the unit (when viewed from the front), you'll find the Wi-Fi button that activates and deactivates the wireless connectivity with the GoPro app for smartphones or the Wi-Fi remote (which is included with the Hero3 Black Edition, but not the Silver or White editions). I guess you could say I have quite specific requirements from an action camera but crucially I think, my filming is about as severe a test as you can get.
In reality what I find is that because the Ghost HD is remote controlled, I’m more inclined to switch it on and off and subsequently I get a good 2 hours+ extra battery life. In terms of photographic and video resolutions and frame rates, the white and silver look to be upgrades to the original GoPro Hero (reviewed here) and the GoPro Hero 2 respectively, albeit with a sharper lens and better low light performance.
