While there aren't many giveaways in the clip, it shows both a swimming pool dive and a wide-angle lens -- this is undoubtedly a waterproof device meant to take on the likes of GoPro. The RE camera is always on, and activates by simply holding the camera thanks to capacitive sensors on the case. It won't even bother you by making you turn it on -- it turns on automatically when you pick it up. HTC is getting into the action camera game with the RE Camera, a super easy-to-use shooter that aims at taking the guesswork out of capturing moments of your life that may not be as action-packed as the ones you'd record on a GoPro. You can just put your smartphone away and use the device without any composition, allowing the wide-angle lens to capture the entire scene. The RE will be available for $200 in white, blue, orange, and teal later this month (in the US). The RE App, available for iOS and Android, can turn your smartphone into a live viewfinder and data storage unit. HTC on Wednesday announced the RE camera, a periscope-shaped 16MP GoPro competitor that records 1080p video and timelapses. It's 100+ pages on what you need to know to make beautiful, inexpensive movies using a DSLR. You can then just tap on the shutter button to take a picture, or long press to record video. Don't be mistaken -- the RE Camera isn't an "action camera." It's a "handheld companion camera," which means that its purpose isn't necessarily to accompany its users as they navigate their kayaks through Class V rapids, but instead, perhaps, as they get coffee and clam chowder afterwards.  I cracked up when they superimposed "Cinematic Features" over someone jamming its suction cup onto a window sil. This is all well and good, but at $200 a pop, it might cause some serious pause amongst those who already use their smartphone cameras to capture and stream everything. Even for people looking for simplicity and ease-of-use, the similarly priced GoPro is no Rubik's Cube. The device includes a 146-degree wide-angle lens and image stabilization software, and is built with a waterproof design. The RE Camera will go on sale later this month, but it's available for pre-order right now. So, essentially the RE is a simple, easy-to-use personal camera that aims at letting users "focus on the moment" instead of on settings and framing. The minimalist design -- no viewfinder, only two buttons -- aims at allowing users to record themselves and their friends a whole lot easier without having to worry about framing or settings. The company has posted both a RECamera teaser site and a video (below) which not-so-subtly hint that the adventure-oriented shooter should launch on October 8th, the same day as HTC's "Double Exposure" media event. Photos and videos can be wirelessly transferred to your smartphone over Wi-Fi for review afterward. They lined up the release in hopes parents will buy their kid this camera for Christmas, I don't think they thought of it's usability past that. Today the company announced the RE, a handheld action cam that could easily be confused with a miniature periscope or an inhaler. There's nothing here to confirm rumors that the camera will have a 16-megapixel sensor and wireless networking, but you'll only have to wait a couple of weeks to get the full scoop. You won’t find any kind of display or viewfinder, and the reason is because the RE is designed to be used in conjunction with a smartphone. And once you do pick it up, it's designed to fit comfortably in your hand like a little periscope to record your HD video. The RE Camera can be paired to both Android or iOS smartphones with HTC's app for instant streaming, and automatically backs up everything you capture to the cloud.  |
