Those of you who nominated it had several reasons to love it, partially because the GoPro is all but ubiquitous in this category, which means it’s easy to find accessories, options, peripherals, and other devices that are compatible with it, easy to use with it, or had the GoPro in mind when they were designed. Plus, it’s compatible with tons of peripherals made for GoPro cameras, so you have plenty of options for mounts, housings, and other attachments.The addition of 4G means you can stream, upload and share footage instantly, wherever you are, just as long as you can get a mobile signal. It has mild burst shooting capability, but it does have a few perks other cameras don’t, like the ability to work as a web cam that’s constantly connected to a computer. It packs Sony’s image stabilization and “SteadyShot” technology, designed to help you get crystal clear shots even when you’re in motion and your subject is in motion, and is capable of shooting 13.5MP still images and 1080p HD and 720p HD video at 120fps and 240fps respectively. The 4GEE Action Cam has a 13 megapixel camera, leaving it fairly adept at taking photos, but of course the main thing you want an action camera for is video and for that the 4GEE Action Cam can shoot in up to 1080p at 30fps or in 720p at 60fps. Night photo modes and tons of manual options give you all sorts of control over the quality of your photos, and built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth let you control the camera from afar on your mobile device if you need to. The camera even records additional information like GPS and map position along with your videos so you can overlay it later or include it with whatever video you end up producing. Long battery life, durability, ease of use, accessible storage—this week we’re looking at five cameras that have it all. Of course the biggest feature of the 4GEE Action Cam is its 4G support, which is what allows it to do live streaming in the first place. The camera packs Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth, and more so you can manage it remotely or easily transfer video, and has a built-in stereo mic for sound recording. It is called as Yi action camera and unlike the GoPro's Xiaomi has yet again done the unthinkable by pricing Yi at $64 (under Rs 5,000 approx). EE has done an impressively good job of standing up to the best action cameras around with the deals on the 4GEE Action Cam. The 4GEE Action Cam can keep going for up to three hours of live video streaming, while the GoPro Hero4 is likely to cave in after two hours or less of use. The camera can shoot in full 4K and 1080p HD at 30fps and 120fps respectively, but it kills at 720p HD at 240fps. Skeegle is a new app from EE which lets you share live footage and it’s compatible with the 4GEE Action Cam, so it’s easy to send your footage out as it happens. The GoPro Hero4 might have the edge when it comes to specs, but the 4GEE Action Cam is more feature packed. The good news is that both the 4GEE Action Cam and the GoPro Hero 4 are durable, with rugged designs and waterproof cases. It’s available for under $100 from Amazon (for the camera, waterproof housing, and accessories), and brings 1080p video at 30 fps to the party (along with 720p video at 60fps.) It’s a 12MP still shooter, and has tons of options for manual image and video control both on-board and available via remote control through a Wi-Fi-connected Android or iOS device. The camera also packs Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, and more connection and configuration options than we have room to mention here, and remarkable sound quality, which is a big deal compared to some of the others in the roundup. The 4GEE Action Cam is the first and currently only action camera with 4G support in the UK, so that’s a huge selling point. It can’t match the GoPro Hero4 for video quality, but it has a marginally higher spec camera for photos, 4G support empowering it to stream, upload and share footage instantly, a bigger battery, more storage and an innovative Viewfinder Watch. It’s durable, water-resistant and completely functional when submerged, and can go just about anywhere a pricier camera can go and stand up to just as much punishment. It’s not really meant to be a still shooter in this case, but technically it can capture 8.8MP still images if you need it to, and it packs digital image stabilization on-board. The GoPro Hero4 has a touchscreen display on the camera itself which you can use to change settings and view footage, but that’s far less useful than a screen on a watch, especially if the camera is strapped to your helmet or some other hard to reach location. The GoPro Hero4 has a slightly lower powered 12 megapixel camera, but it’s got more video options.  When you’re buying an action camera durability is key, though a lightweight design can be handy too. It has its own speedy onboard processor, is capable of shooting video at 4K, 1080p, or 720p, at 30 frames per second, or slow-motion video at 240 or 120 frames per second. That makes live streaming possible and as well as making sharing faster and simpler it also ensures you can instantly back your photos and footage up online. Sony’s more affordable action camera, the HDR-AS100V, will set you back $200 at Amazon for the base model. It’s an equally powerful still camera as well, snapping 12 megapixel photos and a burst shooting mode that can capture 30 frames per second. It’s water-resistant, splashproof, and extremely durable though, more than capable of handling the elements and taking beautiful video of your travels or exploits wherever you go. It’s not cheap—in fact, it’ll set you back $500 for the camera alone—but the GoPro Hero 4 Black is an extremely popular action camera, and for good reason. You also pointed specifically to this in-depth review of the Hero 4 as proof of its superiority. Like the others in this roundup, it’s exceptionally durable, and has attachments for just multiple sports (one of you bought yours with a surfboard mount, for example), a shock and drop-resistant, water-resistant, and splashproof body, and more, all in a relatively affordable package compared to other cameras of its type. You praised the built-in stereo microphone and its wind and noise reduction features, and its overall sound quality. If you’re looking to get into the whole “action camera” market without dropping too much money, the SJCAM SJ4000 might be up your alley. The camera even has great automatic low-light and time-lapse modes to make it easy to shoot anytime, anywhere, even for long periods. Both the 4GEE Action Cam and the GoPro Hero4 also have apps if you’d rather control the camera from your phone. The video quality is excellent, many of you praised it specifically, but you also mentioned that you have to muddle through some poorly translated menus and manuals to make the most of it and get to those fine controls. One particular highlight is its Viewfinder Watch, which lets you set up shots and control the camera from your wrist, including snapping photos or starting and stopping recording and it’s included in the price. There is a Smart Remote accessory for the Hero4, but this is sold separately and is still less useful as you have to hold it rather than it being strapped to your wrist. Our friends at Gizmodo were impressed with it for a number of reasons, the least of which was its 240fps 720p HD video, which came out incredibly, as you can see in their full review. You can store up to 64GB worth content (that you shoot) and weighing 72 grams, you won't feel the pinch of carrying it around on adventure. For your money though you get an impressively durable go-anywhere shooter that’s capable of extremely high quality video. They’re also both fairly lightweight so they won’t weigh you down even if they’re strapped to your helmet, though the exact weight with the 4GEE Action Cam will depend on whether you put in in the waterproof case or lightweight case (both of which are included) and with the GoPro Hero4 will depend on whether you buy the Silver edition or the pricier Black model. Whether you’re looking for a sturdy camera you can strap to yourself while you go biking or climbing, or one you can attach to your car to capture the craziness of the road or protect yourself from fraud, a good action camera is a must. Those of you who nominated the 4K Action Cam noted that 240fps full HD video was beautiful, and the image stabilization is a worthwhile feature to consider over other manufacturers. Sony’s FDR-X1000V 4K Action Cam is another pricey model, running $500 at Amazon, and tack on another hundred if you want the Live View remote control feature. If you’re not into spending hundreds upon hundreds for a camera and its associated gear, this is the option for you. Those of you who nominated the SJ4000 praised it for being so affordable, and for offering an incredible bang for the buck. Others of you said that the aftermarket for the GoPro is the widest, meaning you can save money buying used, selling your old items, and finding used peripherals and packages to save some cash. EE knows phones, but action cameras are something new to the network and it has made an ambitious first start with the 4GEE Action Cam.  |
